Mission
Vagabond Acting Troupe was founded on the premise that theatre is inherently communal and personal. It is live and immediate and unlike the majority of traditional contemporary "entertainment forms," unrestricted in the ways in which it may explore issues of humanity, morality and personal communal growth. At the VAT, we believe that the artists respond to a calling, and must stand on the edge, exploring the places that most people will not or cannot go. We believe that the live arts offer the last vestiges of organic ritual exploration of self - and should not attempt to compete with the rich world of cinema and television. Finally, we are committed to community, both within the troupe and beyond the doors of the holy space in which we work. Our mission is to create exciting, meaningful, professional theatre in a partnership with the local community by involving individuals and organizations in each production, training session, workshop, and publication - to create a multigenerational artistic community that not only enjoys viewing theatre but enables itself to actively participate in creating its own personal and community dramatic venues.
Description
The focus of Vagabond Acting Troupe is based on the premise that strong theatre is derived from intense focus on actor training and ensemble development, rather than external spectacle. Thus, the troupe maintains an ongoing ensemble of actors and production personnel who work on multiple projects, from financial development and community outreach, to educational programming, play-writing and staging our full productions. VAT is arranged in a craft-guild structure: Masters (holding advanced degrees from universities and professional programs, who have an extensive performance background) work with journeymen (those with extensive production credits and performance training) as well as novices (those just beginning their exploration of traditional and experimental theatrical forms, with little or no performance history) to develop an atmosphere of training and theatrical growth. Professionals work alongside interns in workshop to create original works, as well as to explore the teachings of theatrical philosophers. Some techniques explored include the training/directing styles of Jerzy Grotowski, Anne Bogart, Stanislavski and Meyerhold, as well as original and adapted movement concepts designed by the troupe's Master-level actors/directors.
