Mission
The Philadelphia Shakespeare Festival was born out of our profoundly personal response to the language and poetry of William Shakespeare, and the belief that the great classical plays of the world hold in them the profound myths that reveal what we all have in common. The exquisite classical writers that we produce have all discovered images that speak to something inside us we know to be true, that is the wellspring of our being and is alive in our unconscious which has come down to us from the first humans. Therefore the classical plays we explore have at their center the myths that are the stories of our search through the ages for truth, meaning and significance, with profound themes, complex characters and most importantly a belief in the power of language as a dynamic presence in the theatre; able to provoke, surprise, delight and disturb. We do not want the listener to just appreciate the language they hear as beautiful, we want them to feel the necessity of it; we want to awaken the need to speak. Using the texts of Shakespeare and the other great classical writers from across time and place, we probe language as a pathway to our inner landscapes. We seek to plumb the depths of these stories as they are written, without spin, political or other agenda, or concepts that are layered on top of the story. Our main interest and that of our audience is in all of the facets of the ancient craft of storytelling.
