The Small Theatre Starter Kit: What if I want to be in charge?
Location: Society Hill Playhouse, 507 South 8th Street (between South & Lombard Streets) Get directions here!
The perfect program for every wide eyed artist who wants to start a company. This Spark event will show you the ins and outs of forming a theatre company, touching on everything a new theatre company needs to be born. From getting your 501c3 to forming your Board of Directors and developing and maintaining mailing lists. All attendees to this program will be given starter kit materials to take home and read through to decide if forming a company is the right decision for you to make. The Starter Kits will be limited to one per company and will include past notes from all Spark functions in previous years.
Special guests: Adam Natale, Director of Membership & Program Development for Fractured Atlas; Beth Dougherty, Esq. with Laura Solomon & Associates
March 15 @ 7pm
Board Networking & Engagement: What if I want others to help me?
Location: Society Hill Playhouse, 507 South 8th Street (between South & Lombard Streets) Get directions here!
All too often Board of Directors work in their little bubbles. Always focusing on how “things have always been done” and what their traditional roles have been and should be. The Spark Committee thought this would be a wonderful time to bring together Board Members from different Spark theatre companies. Breaking that bubble and sharing experiences, both good and bad. All attending theatre companies are encouraged to bring one, two or three of their Board members to this meeting. (No more than three please.) Be sure to include your Board Members’ names (and titles if any) in your RSVP to the Theatre Alliance. Members from inside and outside the community who would like to serve on a theatre Board will be encouraged to attend as well.
Special Guest Moderator: Michael Norris, Executive Director of Art Reach
April 26 @ 7pm
Payroll and Full Time Employees: What if I want to get paid?
Location: Society Hill Playhouse, 507 South 8th Street (between South & Lombard Streets) Get directions here!
Payrolls, paymasters, or Paychex? What’s the difference, right? And what is the right fit for you? You’re doing just fine with your little check book and Excel spreadsheets. Well, maybe you could be balancing that check book more AND maybe it would make it easier around tax time. If you ever wanted to hire an Equity actor, you probably have to find a more legit way of paying them anyway. At some point, it would be great if some of those checks were written out to you too. Ok, clearly there are a lot of questions surrounding this matter and Spark is very aware of your wants and needs. The Spark event aims at answering all your questions and helping your company decipher what is best for your current and upcoming needs. From payrolls, to audits, to getting health insurance.
May 17 @ 7pm

Be there and have your vote counted towards 2010’s Spark Showcase winner! And the cash prize goes to…

What is Spark?
Igniting dialogue and opportunities for small and developing theatre companies, the Spark program includes monthly meetings (February-June) on important topics such as marketing, development, and infrastructure, as well as social gatherings to encourage networking among the small theatre community. The Theatre Alliance also produces the annual
Spark Showcase, an evening of short plays highlighting the work of Spark companies.
