With hilarious insight on contemporary feminism, masculine sensitivity, and the erogenous zones, Defending the Caveman mines the common themes in relationships that go straight to the funny bone while warming the heart.
“Defending the Caveman celebrate the differences between men and woman as audience members recognize themselves in the stories being told on stage,” said BRT’s Artistic Director Keith Baker.
Comedian Rob Becker wrote Defending the Caveman over a three year period that included an informal study of anthropology, mythology, psychology, sociology, and pre-history. A peacemaker in the ongoing misunderstandings between men and women, Defending the Caveman originally opened in San Francisco in 1991 and then moved to Dallas for a year. It went on to sold-out engagements in Washington, DC, Philadelphia and Chicago before opening on Broadway in 1995. It has since become the longest running solo play in Broadway history.
Defending the Caveman will be performed by Philadelphia native Vince Valentine who has been performing in Defending the Caveman since 2004. Valentine has toured throughout the United States in The Soapranos, an interactive parody of the HBO TV series, and has also starred in Joey and Maria’s Italian Wedding and The Godfathers’ Meshuggener Wedding. A finalist in WMMR’s “Philly’s Last Comic Standing”, he performed in the Philadelphia Fringe Festival as a member of the Sketch Comedy Troupe Skitzoids. He has appeared at the Brick Playhouse in their production of Flip the Script and in New York’s Midtown International Theatre Festival starring in What Fools We Lovers Be. When not performing, Valentine teaches a stand-up comedy workshop in Philadelphia.
The special performances series of BRT’s 25th Anniversary will conclude with Ben Vereen (April 20-22).
