INIS NUA THEATRE COMPANY CONTINUES ITS INAUGURAL SEASON WITH THE PHILADELPHIA PREMIERE OF MARK O’ROWE’S Made in China, AT THE PLAYGROUND AT THE ADRIENNE, MAY 12-24TH For Immediate Release: May 4, 2009
Inis Nua Theatre Company, Philadelphia’s only company dedicated to producing contemporary plays from Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England is proud to present Made in China by Mark O'Rowe. Set in a completely re-imagined Dublin underworld, Made in China involves martial artists, rogue cops, savage low-lifes and a curious love of snack foods. A dreadful accident creates a tug of war between two criminal footsoldiers over the loyalty of a third. Self-loathing, guilt, loneliness and black, black humor emerge in this frenzied narrative, culminating in a blistering battle for survival. "We're incredibly excited to present the Philly premiere of Made in China,” says Inis Nua Artistic Director Tom Reing. “We’ve been looking forward to this for months, literally. We think this is powerful, dark and very funny play. Philly audiences are really going to get a kick out of it.” Reing adds, "This play can be brutal, but there's some hope in it too." Playwright Mark O'Rowe was born in 1970 in Dublin, Ireland, to parents Hugh and Patricia O'Rowe. (To whom he dedicated his 1999 play, Howie the Rookie) He grew up in Tallaght, a working class suburb just south of Dublin, and he claims that much of the violence in his work stems from watching and rewatching a tremendous amount of violent, bloody movies when he was in his teens. His other plays include Terminus, Crestfall and From Both Hips. He also wrote the scripts for Boy A and Intermission. Inis Nua Artistic Director and founder, Tom Reing, will helm the production. His credits include all Inis Nua productions to date (A Play on Two Chairs, Tadhig Stray Wandered In, Crazy Gary’s Mobile Disco, Trad and Skin Deep). Tom has also directed for (among others) Azuka Theatre, Shakespeare in Clark Park, Brat Productions and at the Walnut Street Theater Studio 3. The cast includes Inis Nua favorites Mike Dees as Paddy, Charlie DelMarcelle as Kilby and Jered McLennigan as Hughie. The design team includes Terry Smith (Lighting Design), Mikaal Sulaiman (Sound), J. Alex Cordaro (Fight Choreography) Maggie Baker (Costumes) and Lance Kniskern (Set). Inis Nua is proud to continue its first full season with sponsorship from these fine Irish establishments: Fergie's Pub; The Bards; St. Stephen's Green; Dark Horse Pub; Black Sheep Pub; Yellow Bar. In addition, Inis Nua is excited to be having Philadelphia Distillery providing opening night bar services.
