THE ANNENBERG CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS' PENN PRESENTS SERIES LAUNCHES 2008 HOLIDAY SEASON... For Immediate Release: December 8, 2008
...WITH PHILADELPHIA PREMIERE OF LEAHY'S A LEAHY FAMILY CHRISTMAS AND EGOPO THEATER'S SPRING AWAKENING Looking for something new and different to do for the holidays? The University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts' PENN Presents Series just might have the perfect solution with two unique productions! & nbsp;First, Irish sensation LEAHY, the musical octet of multi-talented siblings from Lakefield, Ontario, brings their A Leahy Family Christmas to Philadelphia for the very first time on Friday, December 12 at 8pm. Then, on Saturday, December 13 at 7:30pm, EgoPo Theater's Barrymore Award-nominated production, SPRING AWAKENING takes the stag e for a special one-night event. Both performances will take place at the University of Pennsylvania's Zellerbach Theatre at the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, 3680 Walnut Street. For their first ever solo Holiday Tour, LEAHY'S A Leahy Family Christmas encompasses a little piece of everything that audiences have come to love about these musical siblings, who already have four critically acclaimed albums under their collective belt - Leahy (1997), Lakefield (2001), In All Things (2004), and Live (2006). Comprised mainly of traditional Christmas favorites and seasonal pieces, this spectacular production is made new with help from - among other instruments - Donnell's fiddle, Erin's keyboard, Frank's drums, and of course the entire group0s fiery Irish step dancing that LEAHY fans know and love. While A Leahy Family Christmas is making its Philadelphia debut, this performance marks LEAHY'S second visit to the Annenberg Center. Growing up on their family farm in Ontario, the eight Leahys - Donnell, Siobheann, Frank, Agnes, Doug, Erin, Angus and Maria - formed a bond as siblings and as musicians that continues to thrive and bring them success today. Their originality shines through in each piece that they write, arrange, produce and perform. They got their start early, as teenagers performing with their parents (Dad, a fiddle player, and Mom, an Irish step dancer) throughout Canada, quickly becoming favorites on the music festival circuit - and ever since, their unique talent of blending sounds and styles has allowed them to work within genres from country to heavy metal, and delight audiences with every performance. Following LEAHY on December 13 is EgoPo Theater's SPRING AWAKENING. A sensation among Philadelphia theater fans since September 2005, when Hurricane Katrina forced the Company to relocate here from its New Orleans home where it had performed for 15 successful years, the production was EgoPo's highly-anticipated debut as a Philadelphia-based theater company, and has since become a Tony Award-nominated Broadway Musical. And now, the original play is making a very special one-night appearance at Annenberg. SPRING AWAKENING chronicles a group20of adolescents as they struggle with their sexuality in Victorian Europe, and addresses developing bodies, lifelong friendship and lasting love. The play was censored for almost an entire century before it became a Broadway production.
