The women in this Pulitzer Prize winner are all looking for a way to escape the boredom and loneliness of their lives. Sexual impropriety serves as a contrast to the American dream image so familiar to that of the white picket fences surrounding perfect people leading perfect lives. The movie adaptation garnered two Oscars, a Golden Globe, and is considered to be one of the best ten films of 1955. Picnic has come to be regarded as a pioneering drama for its frank depiction of sexuality and its subliminally cynical take on “love conquers all.” Starring Barrymore nominees Meghan Heimbecker, Evan Jonigkeit, Tim Moyer and Hayden Saunier with Linda Friday, Jean Laustsen, Joe Mallon, Caitlin Elizabeth Reilly, Michael Rodd, Catherine Rush and Barrymore winner Mickey Goldhaber as Mrs. Potts.
