Tony Nominated Actress Ann Crumb in Souvenir at Media Theatre For Immediate Release: January 3, 2008
She has been on Broadway in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Aspects of Love”, the ABBA scored “Chess”, and the long running “Les Miserables”. She has been seen on network television’s “One Life to Live”, “Law and Order”, and “Criminal Intent”. She has been in the National Tours of “Man of La Mancha” and “Evita”, and headlined the National Tours of “Music of the Night” and “Swing”. Her credits include performing on the Grammy winning album “Three Early Songs”, which was her Pulitzer Prize winning father’s 70th birthday album. Not to mention her Barrymore Award, her Arts Recognition Award, and her Tony Award nomination which she received for appearing on The Great White Way in “Anna Karenina”. Her name is Ann Crumb, and she is from Media. Currently residing in Brooklyn Heights, Ms. Crumb will make Media her home once again for several weeks as she takes the lead in The Media Theatre’s “Souvenir” January 23-February 17. “I am so pleased to be working in my hometown theatre,” Ann Crumb said. “Media is such a lovely town, and the theatre is a true jewel. What a privilege it is for the community to have a professional music theatre company right here on State Street!” Ms. Crumb will play the role of Florence Foster Jenkins. Jenkins was a Philadelphia socialite (born in the Wilkes-Barre area) who became legendary for her ‘concerts’ in which she showcased a complete lack of musicality. Jenkins’ renditions of classic arias such as “Music of the Night” were so horrendous that audiences laughed so much they gladly paid to hear her screeching vocals. Eventually, Jenkins moved to Manhattan where she rented Carnegie Hall to perform her favorite songs to a sold out crowd in the 1940’s. The irony of “Souvenir”, which will be directed by The Media Theatre’s Artistic Director Jesse Cline, is that Ann Crumb, known worldwide for her astounding vocals, will be portraying a woman who really could not sing. The somewhat humorous play with music focuses on Jenkins’ working relationship with her accompanist who had the bizarre name of Cosme McMoon.
