Hoffman, in Philadelphia. Hoffman's dark children's tale, originally titled "The Nutcracker and the King of Mice" is retold by Curio in this new adaptation for the stage. It is Christmas at the Stahlbaum home and many guests arrive to celebrate with the family. Young Clara Stahlbaum's mysterious Godfather, Herr Drosselmeyer, arrives and gives gifts to the children. Clara receives a nutcracker, carved and painted in the image of a soldier. Later, after all the guests leave and the children go to bed, Clara gets up and quietly tiptoes downstairs to get her nutcracker from under the tree. In the soft light of the dying fire, she is lulled to sleep under the Christmas tree, and finds herself magically transported into a dreamland where her nutcracker is a Prince. In this fantastical place she encounters a dread enemy - the Mouse Queen. When she and herr mouse-soldiers attack Clara, the Nutcracker Prince tries to defend her but is struck down in the battle. Clara saves her Prince and defeats the Mouse Queen. The battle over, Clara and the nutcracker share a kiss and he becomes a Prince in real life! A surreal but beautiful German fairytale, The Nutcracker transfers strikingly to the Curio stage through projection and shadow play to captivate audiences of all ages.
