Hives for Lives Creates a Buzz at the Main Stage For Immediate Release: June 20, 2007
HIVES FOR LIVES, a charitable organization created by sisters Molly and Carolyn Houlahan, will be selling products during performances of HUMBLE BOY. 15 year-old Molly and 12 year-old Carolyn come from a family of avid beekeepers and they have learned how to bottle their own honey and make lip balm and candles out of beeswax. Three years ago, the young women decided to sell their products to raise money for the American Cancer Society after seeing their beloved grandfather die of throat cancer. “We wanted to do something to remember him and to make sure others would not get sick and die like he did,” they said. Since then, HIVES FOR LIVES has raised over $22,000 for the American Cancer Society and both Molly and Carly have been recognized as representatives for Pennsylvania for the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. Their organization has expanded to include many volunteers called “Helper Bees” and a website (www.hivesforlives.com) where people can donate money and order products. The Houlahans approached People’s Light after receiving an email about HUMBLE BOY that showed the play’s artwork—a colorful illustration by Jason Hawley. “It might be a great fit given the play’s cute theme on the poster of the bee and the garden,” Molly said. HUMBLE BOY tells the story of thirty-five year-old astrophysicist Felix Humble, who returns home following the death of his father, still in search of a unified field theory. But as he collides with his demanding mother, her boorish boyfriend, his former lover, and the mysterious gardener who keeps turning up, he realizes his search for unity must somehow include the chaos of family. Love, physics, and the joys of beekeeping swirl together with a touch of Hamlet in a comedy as intimate as a garden party and as large as the universe itself. HUMBLE BOY previews on Wednesday, June 20th and Thursday, June 21st. Opening night is at 8pm on Friday, June 22, 2007. The show runs through July 15, 2007. Tickets are now on sale and range in price from $28 - $48, with discounts available for groups of 10 or more. For information or to purchase tickets, visit www.peopleslight.org or contact the Box Office, open daily from noon until 6pm, at 610.644.3500. Audiences are encouraged to join the artists after each Thursday night performance to discuss the production.
