Montgomery Theater Brings Local Playwright’s Broadway Hit Back Home: The Desk Set by William Marchant

For Immediate Release: October 30, 2006
Media Contact: Hope deFrenes, Montgomery Theater, 610.405.9973

Bunny Watson has an encyclopedic knowledge of facts and figures and works with a group of women (“the desk set”) in a television network reference department. It’s the 50’s and electronic brains are installed to do the work of people, soon replacing whole departments, but “Emmaracs” and the dawning of the computer age will not best Bunny in any game of wits. Well known as a Tracy and Hepburn movie classic, here is a vintage 1955 Broadway comedy, penned by a native Soudertonian William Marchant, rich with laughter for anyone who has ever entered an office door. Starring in the Kate Hepburn role of Bunny Watson is Lily Mercer. Featuring Tom Tansey and Paul Dake, as well as Theresa Dolan, Kelly Vrooman and Franny Calter. Also included in the cast are Chalie Corrado, Linda Friday, Rob Hargraves, Adam Hinkle, Sarah Kiefer, Randy Moyer, Aurora Nessly, Caroline Rossi, Kevin Schanely and Nicholas Wilder.

Univest Corporation, the sponsor for this show, is a vital, growing company with deep ties to its local communities. In 2006 Univest Corporation is celebrating a milestone - 130 years of service to our communities. Their rich history is enhanced by their desire to remain close to their customers, so they can deliver excellent service and solutions to meet financial needs. Univest has become one of the strongest locally based financial institutions in southeastern Pennsylvania by believing in innovation and performance, using technology to improve the products that are offered, but never forgetting the warm, personal service so important to customers. Univest Corporation and its subsidiaries Univest National Bank and Trust Co., Univest Insurance, Inc, and Univest Investments, Inc., provide community support, leadership, and strong performance in the financial services industry. Univest serves individuals, businesses and nonprofit organizations in Bucks, Chester and Montgomery counties.

Known for its intimate setting, Montgomery Theater has recently become a professional Equity theater, and has raised the bar on theater excellence. Their season thus far has included excellent productions of Jason Robert Brown’s vibrant musical The Last Five Years, John Patrick Shanley’s Psychopathia Sexualis, The Drawer Boy by Michael Healey, and the classic Butterflies Are Free by Leonard Gershe. Each production was cast with some of the Greater Philadelphia area’s best professional actors, along with top-notch local talent, and performed on amazing sets that are a feast for the eyes.

Artistic Director Tom Quinn was recently quoted as saying, “Our mantra here is to serve the play, serve the actor, and serve the audience – in that order. In following this credo, we are allowing the stories to be told as they were intended to be, thus providing the theatergoer with an ultimate experience. One that is both artistic and human.” If you’ve ever attended a Montgomery Theater performance, you know exactly what this means. If you haven’t, then you owe it to yourself to come and feel the magic!
