Side Splitting New Commedy Explores Split Personalities

For Immediate Release: May 12, 2006
Media Contact: Brenna Geffers, The Brick Playhouse, 570.460.2704

The Brick Playhouse brings to Philadelphia the premier of a new award winning comedy, SPLIT PEA POD, by Alex Dremann. Directed by Brenna Geffers, SPLIT PEA POD runs May 8th though May 25th at The Playground @the Adrienne, 2030 Samson Street.

SPLIT PEA POD tells the screwball tale of the Dan and Steve, two long time roommates and best friends, and their gal pal, Gert. Dan has been dating Gert, off and on, as he is keen to remind her, for ten years. Gert loves Dan. Steve loves Gert. Dan thinks he might love Gert, but maybe not. Steve loves Dan. Does Dan love Steve? When Dan decides to ask Gert to move in with him, Gert is split between her budding career and Dan’s possible, sometimes, love for her. Steve is split between wanting Dan and Gert for himself, and wanting them … together. And Dan is split right down the middle. Literally. Enter Evil Dan.

The 2005 Roger Cornish Playwriting Award winner for a full-length play, Philadelphia-area playwright Alex Dremann’s SPLIT PEA POD is a comedy about a man who splits in half in order to satisfy both his love for lifelong best friend and his need to be unattached. With a Master’s degree in Playwriting from the University of Southern California, Dremann has had his plays produced across the country over the past decade, from New York to San Francisco, Philadelphia to LA. Past work from Dremann has been hailed as “sometimes touching, sometimes hilarious” by LA Weekly and “evocative” by Backstage West.

Featuring a cast of Philadelphia rising stars, SPLIT PEA POD features Nick Suders, previously seen in Allens Lane’s SUBURBIA and as a company member at Allenberry Theater, as the charming, if not obtuse Dan. Robert DaPont, whose work has been featured at the Mum Puppet Theatre, Green Light Productions and Metropolitan Playhouse in NYC, plays Steve, a bisexual bundle of nerves and sexual tension. The Brick welcomes back Michelle Hammonds, who has been seen in Dremann’s previous romp through modern day sexuality, POSTCOITAL VARIATIONS, as well as the fringe hit, DISPOP. Hammonds plays Gert, the object of desire of at least two halves of the two men in her life. Also returning for a second round at the Brick is Sarah Kiefer, whose graceful work has been seen at the Montgomery Theatre and the Vagabond Acting Troupe. Kiefer is Steve’s sexy psychiatrist, whom Steve has dubbed “The Beast”. As the monkey wrench in the romantic bliss of Gert and Dan is Evil Dan, played by Chris Heuisler. Heuisler is a recent re-transplant whose work was seen earlier at Hedgerow Theater. This love triangle, or quadrilateral, or parallelogram, bounces, flips, stomps and flails its way through a story of true love; or at true mostly- sometimes-maybe in a few years-don’t want to spoil the friendship- what about my job- what about your roommate- modern day love.
