Lion In Winter Opens Jan. 19 at Hedgerow Theatre For Immediate Release: December 28, 2005 Hedgerow Theatre kicks off the new year with James Goldman’s classic The Lion In Winter Jan. 19-Feb. 26, directed by Ken Marini. Featuring webs of deceit, insidious plots and royal intrigue, The Lion In Winter is a crowning achievement in story-telling. Set during Christmas in the 12th century, this razor-sharp and witty script introduces audiences to an aging King Henry II, who has gathered his estranged family together in a castle where he has imprisoned his wife Eleanor. Political scheming runs rampant as Henry plans to select the next monarch. Co-founder of People’s Light & Theatre Company, Ken Marini has directed over 30 productions including Amadeus, Sleuth, The Complete Works of Shksp. (Abridged) and Romeo & Juliet for the Hedgerow Theatre. The ensemble will feature Penelope Reed as Eleanor of Aquitaine and Gene Terruso as King Henry. Last fall, Miss Reed’s played Charlotte in Moon Over Buffalo at Bristol Riverside Theatre as well as Emily Dickinson in The Belle of Amherst at the University of Arts and at Hedgerow. Ms. Reed many credits include decades at The Milwaukee Repertory and McCarter Theaters before finding her new theatre home and company as the Producing Artistic Director of Hedgerow Theatre. Her many roles include Blanche in Streetcar Named Desire; Mary Stuart, Winnie in Happy Days, Amanda in Glass Menagerie, Miss Jane Marple in Murder at the Vicarage, and Olga in The Three Sisters. Mr. Terruso was last seen at the Hedgerow in 2004 its highly-acclaimed production of Sleuth. His many credits include performances on Broadway, Off-Broadway, at London’s Abbey Theatre and in Chicago. Locally he has performed at the Arden Theatre. He is the Director of the School of Theater Arts at Philadelphia’s University of the Arts where Miss Reed and Mr. Marini teach. Mr. Terruso and Ms. Reed began building a University of Arts/Hedgerow Theatre alliance with the production of the Barrymore-award-winning play The Lives of Bosie, which transferred to the Arts Bank after its Hedgerow run. The ensemble will also feature Philadelphia professionals Joseph Aniska as John; Mary Lee Bednarek as Alais; Alex Hurt as Geoffrey; John Jezior as Richard and Daniel Robaire as Philip. Performances are Thursday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $22 on Thursday and Sunday, $25 on Friday and Saturday, with $3 discounts for students and seniors. Tickets for students under age 18 are $10. Special performances are Jan. 20 with meet-the-cast reception following and a pre-show tea prior to the 2 p.m. matinee Jan. 29.
