Freedom Rep’s 2006: Back with a Vengeance Season! For Immediate Release: December 2, 2005 Emergence-See! Written and performed by Daniel Beaty Directed by Walter Dallas January 31, 2006-February 19, 2006 ***Opening Night February 4, 2006 “Emergence-See! is brilliant…a spellbinding performance.” -New York Amsterdam News “I was on my feet shouting like someone in church, I was so moved.” –Actress Ruby Dee “A dazzling 90 minutes.” -New York Times. It's 2006. A slave ship has risen ghostlike out of the Hudson River in front of the Statue of Liberty sending the nation into a whirlwind of emotion and exploration. This occurs on the day that a poetry slam is being held. By the time Mr. Beaty is through he has touched on reparations, ethnic identity, ugly babies, street vendors (within hours they’re hawking slave-ship buttons) and dozens of other topics. In this powerful tour-de-force, Beaty portrays 40 characters ranging from an 11 year-old girl in the projects to the ghost of a 400 year-old African chief. Emergence-See! has taken DC, New York and Europe by storm. And now, Philadelphia gets to see what all the excitement is about! You must see it to believe it. “A stunning achievement!!” No Good NigG@ BLueZ poems & tales for black men in a post-civil right Written and performed by Jerome “J-Square” Jones, Mo Beasley and Razor Ramone Director TBA March 8, 2006-March 26, 2006 Opening Night March 11, 2006 No Good Nigg@ bLueZ, a spoken-word/multimedia theatre experience, unloads a devastating spoken-word dissemination of what it means to be African-American male in America today, spun exponentially from the examination of a single word. This is a riveting performance where love meets reality, and where confessions have no shame. This brilliant hip-hop inspired work gives us a front seat ticket on three males’ journey from the raw pain of being young and black, through the confusion of adolescence to their victory of becoming magnificent Black men. "Simply put, this is everything theatre should be: entertaining without being fluffy, instructional without being didactic, angry without being abusive, humorous without being deferential.” -Theatre 2k.com review.
