Course Description:
Come hear about the most provocative, compelling and engaging shows that are right in your own backyard. Philadelphia is home to many prize winning plays which premiere this season. In this class, the moderator, artistic directors, and actors will discuss their season, highlight certain plays, re-enact scenes, or have prize winning playwrights discuss their craft. Some of the same themes have cropped up in different show at the different companies. We will discuss some of the similarities and differences. Learn about the different companies and their visions and goals for the future. Don't miss this exciting new class, get discount coupons to upcoming shows, and meet new people with the same passion as you.
Gayle Rosenwald Smith who will be moderating the sessions, is a writer, lawyer, and lover of the arts. She is a trustee of the Charlotte Cushman Foundation which gives grants to theater companies based in the Philadelphia area.
February 7th - Sec B:
Blanka Zizka, co-Artistic Director of The Wilma Theater, winner of four Barrymore awards for direction of a play and The Pulitzer Prize finalist, Dael Orlandersmith, the author of award winning plays Yellowman and The Gimmick will be on hand to discuss their collaboration on Dael's new play Raw Boys, premiering March.
February 28th - Sec C:
Charles McMahon The Lantern Theater Company. This small professional theater recently received two Barrymore awards and offers plays from Shakespeare to local prize winning playwrights. Their shows take you to all parts of the world without having to carry your baggage! Actors from their new adapation of William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream will be on hand to perform skits and answer questions about the show and the company.
March 7th - Sec D:
Seth Rozin Interact Theatre Company. Each production invites audiences deep into conflicts and cultures that may get 10 seconds on the evening news but warrant intense dramatic exploration. The Beauty Inside, by Catherine Filloux, is a world premiere that follows the tenuous relationship between a westernized Turkish lawyer and her young traditional client, who has survived an honor killing. Seth Rozin, co-founder and Producing Artistic Director of InterAct, and Susan Bernfield, founder and Artistic Director of New Georges in NYC (a theatre company with a mission to promote American women writers) will be co-producing the production, and will be on hand to discuss the challenges of producing new work with such explosive content.
