Organization Description

The Stagecrafters is dedicated to making theatrical productions of the highest quality available to the residents of Philadelphia and the surrounding communities. Loyal and committed volunteers provide the foundation for each yearly roster of productions, which encompass a wide range: comedies, dramas, farces, mysteries, recent hits, hard-hitting contemporary fare, classics, revivals. We choose plays which are theatrically exciting, artistically challenging, and ideologically relevant. We produce five shows annually in a season running from September to June; plays are selected for appeal across a wide spectrum of tastes and inclinations. We occupy a property in the heart of Chestnut Hill in northwest Philadelphia, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Buildings. We have owned our premises for over half-a-century, and continue to update our buildings and production facilities to meet present-day live performance needs. A full range of technical and backstage capabilities is in place to support our high production standards, and the theater is fully air-conditioned and handicapped-accessible. Our auditorium accommodates 186 with 184 upholstered fixed theater seats and two wheelchair spaces.

The Stagecrafters is a non-profit volunteer-based theater whose purpose is to advance the knowledge and appreciation of theater arts and to produce plays of high literary and artistic standards for the entertainment, education and enrichment of the community. Through the years our commitment to excellence in the art and craft of live theater has drawn to our doors large audiences, has afforded the participants the opportunity to become proficient in theater skills and to gain personal enrichment, and has consistently brought us high critical and popular acclaim. Over the past eight decades our company has evolved from a small club to its present status as a full-fledged theatrical organization, guided by a Board of Directors.

The Stagecrafters purchased the property it occupies in 1950, thus being responsible for its maintenance, upkeep, and modernization for the last sixty years. Although continually faced with decisions of where our dollars can be spent most effectively, we never lose sight of our goal to produce live theater of the highest quality, while keeping our admission prices at a level affordable to our audiences.
