Fly City - Outdoor Flying Trapeze Lessons

Children and adults will fly 25 feet above Broad Street with “Fly City – outdoor flying trapeze lessons – presented by Philadelphia School of Circus Arts (PSCA) and Fly School Circus Arts (FSCA) during the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (PIFA). “Fly City” helps open the month-long festival by taking flight on Thursday, April 7, 2011 until Sunday, May 1, 2011, at 9:00am, 11:30am, 4:30pm, and 7pm. The outdoor rigging will be set up in the University of the Arts lot, between Spruce and Pine streets, at 313 S. Broad St., Philadelphia, PA 19102. The cost is $55 for a two-hour lesson for participants age six and up.  Reservations are available at the Kimmel Center Box Office, by calling (215) 546-PIFA or by visiting www.pifa.org.

 “Flying trapeze lessons are a great activity that tap into your inner courage, sense of trust, and attention to detail,” said Fly School Circus Arts Executive Director Mary Kelly Rayel.  “Trained instructors provide a motivating and inspirational atmosphere where you are able to develop a sense of accomplishment – one you can’t get from anything else!”

During lessons, students of various ages and abilities will soar through the air on a full-scale flying rig.  Students will learn all the techniques of this art form – including take-off from the platform, the swing, the transfer to the catcher, and the drop to the net.  Classes are open to students six years old and up. The weight limit is 250 lbs. All participants will be fully harnessed in the air. Some weather conditions may be a cause for rescheduling by the instructors. Cancellation is at the discretion of the instructors.  Rescheduling, ticket exchanges and refunds will be handled by the Kimmel Center box office.

About Fly School Circus Arts

Fly School Circus Arts (FSCA) provides outdoor flying trapeze lessons from May to October each year at Lions Camp Kirby, 1735 Narrows Hill Road, Upper Black Eddy, PA 18972.  Students of all skill levels travel from Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey.   Skill levels range from new beginners who want to experience “flying” for the first time, to students who have taken prior lessons and now want to perfect their skills and routines.  FSCA is run by Executive Director Mary Kelly Rayel – who also is an instructor at Philadelphia School of Circus Arts (PSCA).  Rayel graduated from Ithaca College with a B.A. in Theater. She also attended the former Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Clown College.  For 20+ years, she has taught and performed for Club Med, Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus, and PSCA.

About Philadelphia School of Circus Arts 
PSCA is the region’s center of contemporary circus arts.  PSCA presents professional and student productions during the year.  Seasoned faculty lead a curriculum featuring aerials (static trapeze, corde lisse, aerial silks and lyra), juggling, unicycling, tightwire, tumbling, acrobatics, Chinese pole, and physical conditioning.  In addition to ongoing classes, PSCA also offers introductory workshops, birthday parties, rental space, summer camp and special guest performances.  Students are all ages and all levels. Philadelphia School of Circus Arts Also Presents “Green Fairy Cabaret”
In addition to “Fly City,” PSCA will transport audiences back to 1900s Paris in the production of “The Green Fairy Cabaret,” from Thursday, April 14, 2011 to Sunday, April 17, 2011, at the Kimmel Center’s Hamilton Garden, at 10:00pm daily, and 12:00pm (Noon) on Saturday and Sunday.  The show will feature performances by top circus artists in fabric (tissu), aerial ladder, trapeze and acrobatics.  Tickets are $16 for children, students and seniors (age 60, and $20 for regular admission.  Tickets are on sale now at the Kimmel Center Box Office, by calling (215) 546-PIFA or by visiting www.pifa.org.
